“Sugar Shack”, by Ernie Barnes (1938-2009) , was made famous by the hit show Good Times. It was also the cover to Marvin Gaye’s I Want You album.

A little known fact about Ernie the Artist is that he was once a professional Football player! In the early 1960s, he played for the Baltimore Colts, the San Diego Chargers, and the Denver Broncos.

His autobiography From Pads To Palettes, available in most bookstores, tells his really interesting story. Here is Ernie’s official website: http://erniebarnes.com/

It goes to show you that Artists can come from any kind of background.

…….Hmmmm… I happened to play a little football myself. Pop Warner for 2 seasons. Wide Receiver and Safety. Maybe I should’ve went pro, too… .

Julian Okwu, the author, travelled around the U.S. looking for Black Men who weren’t “stereotypical”, meaning that they had interests other than just being Rappers or Basketball players. His goal was to show the diversity of us.

At the height of its popularity, the book and author were featured on Oprah.

The book not only features your truly , but also freelance journalist Toure, ex-Congressman Cleo Fields, and Cartoonist Keith Knight among others.

At that time I hadn’t even discovered Fine Art, and was deeply involved in Comic Strips and being Co-Art Director at Youth Outlook/Pacific News Service (PNS) in San Francisco.

That’s where I met Julian, in the offices of PNS, and that meeting led to him interviewing me. It was one of the most introspective conversations I’ve ever had with anyone.

Man, I tell you– you never know where life can take you….
