“The Music That Shapes Us”

Classic-AlbumsIn no particular order, these are Classic Albums that helped to shape me. I rarely, rarely like EVERY SINGLE SONG on an album, but these are ones that I do.

It takes many years and many listens to make my list.

Note: I only showed one Prince album cover, but I list 4 of his albums.

Pink Floyd: The Wall (1979)

Prince: Dirty Mind (1980), 1999 (1982), Purple Rain (1984), Sign O The Times (1987)

Stevie Wonder: Innervisions (1973)

Sly & The Family Stone: Stand! (1969)

Funkadelic: One Nation Under A Groove (1979)

Ice Cube: Amerikkka’s Most Wanted (1990)

                   Death Certificate (1991)

Nirvana : Nevermind (1991)

Henning Mankell, Author, Buys 2 Originals

Henning Mankell A gentleman came to my booth in Union Square on April 9th, and after looking around the display a bit, he ended up buying ”Little Swimmer” and “Blue Paradise” (images below)Little-Swimmer-(Progress).

He said that he was from Sweden, and I told him he was the first person from that part of the world to buy from me.

He told me to GOOGLE his name when I got home, so I did.

I’ll admit that I had no idea who he was– but Henning Mankell

Blue-Paradise

is one of the best selling authors in the world. His latest book is The Trouble Man, and San Francisco was a stop on his U.S. book tour.

Mankell’s best known for a series of mystery novels starring his most iconic creation, Inspector Kurt Wallander.

“The Fate of Hilltop Ballad XI”

DSC02451Abbie & Harris came to a show we had at Golden Gate Park/Music Concourse a few weeks ago.

They liked the Hilltop Ballad series I started, which depicts my daughter at 1 years old, traveling through a “Wonderforest”– but the catch is that she’s playing with an imaginary friend.

They didn’t purchase a painting at first viewing, but contacted me afterwards.

Much thanks, Abbie & Harris, for three reasons:

1. I was glad to meet you;  2. Hanging Hilltop Ballad XI on your wall;  3. It gave me a excuse to take my daughter to the California Academy of Sciences (EXCELLENT aquarium, if you haven’t been yet).

“Your Art Is Real”

Sometimes an Artist creates a painting and it can take a while for someone to connect with it. P1010014Other times, you find a piece almost flying out of your hands as soon as its finished. This piece, “Not Far From The Tree” was sold at the 2nd showing.

Michael Domecq, a Documentary Filmmaker born in New York spent some time at our show talking about how my Art made him feel (”This Art is real……. This is what life is all about…).

Somewhere between puffs of cigar smoke he connected with this painting.

Mike– I appreciate your words about my work.

You understand it. Not-Far-From-The-Tree

“Loren, the Lord of Comic Books”

LorneIf Albert Guillory was the one to spark my interest in drawing (I’m sure you’ve heard my “Turkey” story), then Lorene has to be the one who threw gas on the flame.

Loren, one of my childhood friends, introduced me to the wonderful world of comic books.

It was our ritual to go up a very steep hill on our street to buy comics at the Rexall Drug Store. Believe it or not, but I would ride standing on the back of Loren’s chair, and he would push us— UPHILL— using only his arms! This cat was strong! The distance had to be 1/8 a mile!

Loren was the first comic book fanatic I met. He kept his books in plasticX-Men #133, and it was a long process to earn his trust to even TOUCH one of his prized possessions. If you opened his books without extreme care, he’d punch you in the chest!

I collected comic books feverishly until I was 18, when the prices just got too high, and the stories didn’t interest me as much…… But I still have them, wrapped in plastic, and surrounded by armed guards…..

“South Central, Los Angeles”

DSC02206Recently I took a trip to Los Angeles, CA  (death in the family. R.I.P. to Mrs Irving), and this is the house my family used to live in.

I haven’t been inside that house since 1980, when we moved to Northern California. My best friend Ice introduced us to the new owners, and they were kind enough to let us see the inside!

Going inside the house was a completely bizarre experience, like going through a time warp….. It looked pretty much the same except for how they expanded the kitchen.
They still have the orange tree in the backyard, and people still steal the oranges just like did to us 30 years ago….
By the way, that’s my sister Klenda in the pic….
